Impossibly thin. Impressively fast. North has reduced the submerged portion of their new High Modulus Prepreg Carbon masts by over 15% in thickness compared to our standard Carbon masts, while also increasing both bending and torsional stiffness.
The HM80 favors disciplines without wind power - prone surf, pump, and downwind. Its shorter chord length across the entire mast reduces drag and increases maneuverability, delivering more glide, more efficient pumping, and quicker turns.
The HM85 covers all disciplines, with a focus on wing-foiling. In wind-powered disciplines, edging against the wind creates forward drive, coming from both the front wing and the mast. To efficiently provide this drive, the chord length in the submerged part of the HM85 mast is slightly longer, increasing near the top to maximize stiffness without a drag penalty, as this upper section clears the water when foiling.
The HM105 has been optimized for racing. Its submerged portion is 1mm thinner than the HM80 and HM85 to provide maximum top-end speed, though this makes it unsuitable for jumping. Like the HM85, the HM105's chord length is tailored for good upwind drive in the submerged region, with increased chord above the waterline to maximize stiffness.
Across all models, a more efficient underwater shape means less drag and higher, easier-to-reach top speeds. North has also significantly reduced mast ventilation, no matter the sea state.
